Manning Wolfe, an author and attorney residing in Austin, Texas, writes cinematic-style, smart, fast-paced thrillers with a salting of Texas bullshit. The first in her series, featuring Austin Lawyer Merit Bridges, is Dollar Signs: Texas Lady Lawyer vs. Boots King. A graduate of Rice University and the University of Texas School of Law, Manning’s experience has given her a voyeur’s peak into some shady characters’ lives and a front row seat to watch the good people who stand against them. Morning session: Write a Short Story in a Day
Description: Using a modified 7-point-plot method (developed by Algis Budrys), a couple of characters created through interview/profiling techniques, a menu of “prefab” settings and time periods, and a checklist of problem types and possible solutions, a story can be drafted in just one day. This method can also be used to write scenes for a novel or a series of linked stories that can form the basis of a novel.
Lunch from 12:00 to 1:00 pm
Afternoon session: How to Publish a Book
Description: What options do authors have now to publish their work? What's the difference between traditional, academic/educational, and self publishing? Do you need an agent? What are the terms of a typical contract, and how can you avoid being scammed? What are the upfront costs? What goes into a proposal? How long does it take to publish a book? What are authors expected to do in terms of marketing?
