A Touch of Spice with Six Honest Serving Men
Research / ReSearch
Rudyard Kipling’s poem is the very essence of research - the What, Why, When, How, Where and Who - for any kind of writing, particularly historical fiction. It is the writer’s responsibility to research the facts then drop them into a story in an engaging manner that does not hector the reader. Finding those facts, then cross-checking them, can be a labyrinthian task.
Gidley will discuss her research into the Caribbean of the 1800s, how that information was massaged into a story, and how research can in fact change the trajectory of a story. She will encourage, through a short writing exercise, the use of ‘spice’ in writing - advice given by her first publisher.
Apple Gidley is the published author of two books, many articles, and writes a regular blog, A Broad View on whatever takes her fancy.
